This course is tailored for individuals requiring essential first attack firefighting skills. Participants will be trained in preparing for emergencies, identifying and assessing critical situations, and using an extinguisher to contain incidents safely with initial response tools. They will also develop proficiency in reporting on the facility’s emergency response procedures. Training and Assessment is delivered on behalf of ABC First Aid RTO 3399.

Upon completing this course, students will acquire the essential skills and knowledge to effectively manage small emergencies within a facility.

The course covers handling small-scale emergencies, such as:

  • Small Fires: Managing fires that can be controlled with a fire extinguisher.
  • Chemical Spills: Addressing spills using personal protective equipment (PPE) and spill kits provided by the facility.

Students will be trained in the use of emergency equipment and techniques necessary for containing these types of incidents, ensuring a prompt and effective response to mitigate potential hazards

 

Pre-course learning is required.

Fire Extinguisher Training is provided to employees responsible for performing fire safety checks and evacuations in any workplace, office or manufacturing environment. If you are unsure whether your workplace qualifies, please speak to your employer or check WorkSafe Australia for more information.

This course can also be taken by concerned persons to improve their own at-home fire evacuation planning.

 

Minimum duration is 1.5 hours face-to-face with practical components that require physical participation. Pre-course learning is required.

Participants will receive hands-on, practical training with a range of firefighting equipment, including fire extinguishers, fire hose reels, and fire blankets. This course offers direct experience in using these tools effectively to manage and extinguish fires.

In addition to operating equipment, participants will be thoroughly instructed in proper firefighting tactics and safety procedures. This includes learning how to:

  • Utilise Fire Extinguishers: Understand the types of fires each extinguisher can handle and practice using them safely and efficiently.
  • Operate Fire Hose Reels: Gain proficiency in deploying and using fire hose reels to control larger fires.
  • Deploy Fire Blankets: Learn how to use fire blankets to smother and extinguish small fires safely.

The training emphasises correct techniques and safety measures to ensure that participants can respond confidently and effectively in emergency situations, minimising risks and enhancing overall safety.

This course is designed to provide comprehensive instruction to ensure all employees are proficient in the safe use of fire extinguishers, fire hose reels, and fire blankets. This course combines theoretical knowledge with practical experience, equipping your team to effectively manage small fire incidents in the workplace.

Course Components:

  • Fire Triangle: Understand the three elements required for a fire to ignite and sustain, and how removing one element can help extinguish a fire.
  • Raising the Alarm: Learn the correct procedures for alerting others and initiating emergency response protocols.
  • Fire Safety and Evacuation: Gain knowledge on safety measures and evacuation strategies to protect employees during a fire.
  • Classes of Fire: Identify different types of fires and the appropriate methods for tackling each class.
  • Types of Fire Extinguishers: Familiarise yourself with various types of extinguishers and their specific uses based on fire classes.
  • Safety Procedures When Fighting Fires: Learn essential safety practices to follow while combating fires to minimize risks.
  • Firefighting Tactics: Develop effective tactics for extinguishing fires and controlling fire incidents safely.

By integrating both theoretical instruction and practical drills, this course ensures that your employees are well-prepared to handle fire emergencies confidently and safely.

Suitable for individuals, workplaces of all sizes, and volunteer and community-based groups.
Any adult (aged 18+) can attend.
There are no prerequisites for this course.

Language, Literacy and Numeracy (LLN) Requirements
Participants will require suitable LLN skills to complete the following tasks/skills:

  • Read information from a PowerPoint, Manual and whiteboard.
  • Listen and understand verbal information delivered by an English-speaking qualified fire safety trainer.
Your First Aid Trainer delivers this course in partnership with ABC Licence Training (RTO Code 3399). Upon successful completion, participants will receive a nationally recognised Statement of Attainment issued by ABC Licence Training.

Certification Validity

There is no renewal recommendation set by the industry for this course. However, regular refresher training is recommended to maintain competency.
