Course participants report improved confidence in providing first aid to individuals.

This course is based on guidelines developed through the expert consensus of people with mental health problems and from the viewpoint of professionals within the mental health community.

Evaluations consistently show that MHFA training is associated with improved knowledge of mental illnesses, their treatments and appropriate first aid strategies, and confidence in providing first aid to individuals with mental illness.
It is also associated with decreased stigma and an increase in the help provided.

This is a 2 day (14 hour) face-to-face course.

Which is delivered either;

  • 2 consecutive days (e.g. Thursday & Friday) or
  • 2 individual days (e.g. 2 Fridays)

This course has been designed in 4 separate modules and can be delivered as four separate 3.5 hour sessions upon corporate request.

Module 1
We are introduced to youth mental health first aid with Adolescent development and common mental illnesses affecting youth, introduction to the MHFA Action Plan, and we will discuss signs and symptoms of depression in young people.

Module 2
We continue depression in young people and crisis first aid with exploring a difficult topic – suicidal thoughts and behaviours and crisis first aid for non-suicidal self-injury.
And we look at the signs and symptoms of Anxiety in young people and different types of anxiety disorders.

Module 3
We cover the MHFA Action plan for crisis first aid for traumatic events.
And we will look at eating disorders, how to apply the action plan for eating disorders and if they are in a crisis first aid for medical emergencies.

Module 4
We begin by looking at Signs and Symptoms of Psychosis in young people with the MHFA action plan for psychotic disorders and if they are experiencing a severe psychotic state.
We also look at substance misuse in young people and how to apply the MHFA action plan for substance misuse or if they are in crisis first aid for Intoxication, for aggressive behaviour or for other medical emergencies.

This course will not teach you to diagnose a mental illness, nor treat it, just as a conventional first aid course will not teach you to be a doctor.

  •  You will learn how to recognise that someone may have a mental health problem.
  • What you learn will help you to be supportive of them and help them to receive appropriate professional help as early as possible.

The course is based on guidelines developed through the expert consensus of people with lived experience of mental health problems and professionals.
It provides an overview of mental illnesses, risk factors, prevalence, and impact before taking a much closer look at the following mental health problems:
