Youth Mental Health First Aid
The 2-day, 14-hour Youth Mental Health First Aid course equips adults (18 and older) with the skills to offer initial support to teens facing mental health challenges or crises. This course dives into youth mental health practices and includes a practical assessment at the end. Training and assessment are provided by ABC First Aid (RTO 3399).
You can take this course in a face-to-face format or opt for the Youth Mental Health Blended option, which combines half online learning with half in-person training.

In this course, you’ll learn how to recognize the signs and symptoms of common youth mental health blended issues in young people who may be facing a mental health problem or crisis. We’ll guide you through a practical, evidence-based action plan to help until they receive professional support or the situation improves.
- Intervene early: Identify mental health problems in adults by recognizing key signs and symptoms.

Adults who complete the course become Mental Health First Aiders (MHFAiders), equipped with the knowledge, confidence, and skills to provide young people or someone with mental health information and support when it matters most.

This course is based on guidelines developed through the expert consensus of people with mental health problems and from the viewpoint of professionals within the mental health community.
Evaluations consistently show that MHFA training is associated with improved knowledge of mental illnesses, their treatments and appropriate first aid strategies, and confidence in providing first aid to individuals with mental illness.
It is also associated with decreased stigma and an increase in the help provided.
This is a 2-day (14-hour) face-to-face course.
Which is delivered either;
2 consecutive days (e.g. Thursday & Friday) or
2 individual days (e.g. 2 Fridays)
This course has been designed in 4 separate modules and can be delivered as four separate 3.5 hour sessions upon corporate request.
Express Courses (most popular)
This course delivery style is also known as Blended Face to Face & e-Learning. These courses are delivered partially online in your own time and with a face-to-face session (1 day).

This course delivery style is also known as Face to Face Only. These courses are delivered completely face-to-face in class.
Course delivery
Module 1
We are introduced to youth mental health first aid with Adolescent development and common mental illnesses affecting youth, introduction to the MHFA Action Plan, and we will discuss signs and symptoms of depression in young people.
Module 2
We continue depression in young people and crisis first aid by exploring a difficult topic – suicidal thoughts and behaviours and crisis first aid for non-suicidal self-injury.
And we look at the signs and symptoms of Anxiety in young people and different types of anxiety disorders.
Module 3
We cover the MHFA Action plan for crisis first aid for traumatic events.
We will look at eating disorders, how to apply the action plan for eating disorders and if they are in a crisis, first aid for medical emergencies.
Module 4
We begin by looking at Signs and Symptoms of Psychosis in young people with the MHFA action plan for psychotic disorders and if they are experiencing a severe psychotic state.
We also look at substance misuse in young people and how to apply the MHFA action plan for substance misuse or if they are in crisis first aid for Intoxication, aggressive behaviour or other medical emergencies.
This course will not teach you to diagnose a mental illness nor treat it, just as a conventional first aid course will not teach you to be a doctor.
You will learn how to recognise that someone may have a mental health problem.
What you learn will help you to be supportive of them and help them to receive appropriate professional help as early as possible.
The course is based on guidelines developed through the expert consensus of people with lived experience of mental health problems and professionals.
It provides an overview of mental illnesses, risk factors, prevalence, and impact before taking a much closer look at the following mental health problems.

- Suicidal thoughts and behaviours
- Non-suicidal self-injury

Suitable for individuals, workplaces of all sizes, and volunteer and community-based groups.
Any adult (aged 18+) can attend.
There are no prerequisites for this course.
Please Note: This course is not a therapy or a support group.
Language, Literacy and Numeracy (LLN) Requirements
Participants will require suitable LLN skills to complete the following tasks/skills:
Read information from a PowerPoint, Manual and whiteboard
Listen and understand verbal information delivered by an English-speaking licensed Mental Health First Aid instructor.
Requirements for completion
Participants need to attend 100% of this first-aid training.
If they can’t, please email us for further arrangements.
To receive accreditation as a Mental Health First Aider, you will be required to complete an online assessment following training.
Certification Issued
Accreditation is provided by Mental Health First Aid Australia.
Upon completing the post-training online assessment, certification is issued as a Mental Health First Aider.
This course does not form part of a Vocational Education Qualification.
Certification Validity
Three (3) years from the date of issue.
We recommend you use an email address that is still valid in 3 or 6 years’ time.
Youth MHFA Refresher training is required within three years, taken as either a:
- 4 hour face-to-face course or
- 2 separate 2.5-hour online video conferencing courses.
Taking a refresher course ensures you can hold on to your certification of validity.
In the 6th year of the first course, the full course must be completed again.
