Standard Mental Health First Aid – Refresher

Face to FaceOnline

Standard MHFA Refresher Face-to-Face

The 4-hour Standard Mental Health First Aid Refresher course allows people who have previously completed a full Standard Mental Health First Aid course, within the last 3 years, to refresh their knowledge and skills on how to provide initial support to adolescents experiencing a mental health problem or crisis.

$ 175

This refresher training will allow you to:

  • Practise your mental health first aid skills in a supportive environment and get feedback.

  • Ensure you are providing the best possible, evidence-based first aid for people
developing mental health problems, experiencing a worsening of an existing mental health problem or in a mental health crisis.

  • Learn from each other about what language, tools or referrals work well.

You will need to complete an online assessment at the end of this course to renew
your accreditation for a further three years.

What living with mental health issues feels like

We don’t support the idea that mental health is ‘not a real health concern’. The reason we refer to the course as Mental Health First Aid is that, like any other health issue you may have, mental health issues can have very serious and widespread repercussions. Our mental states aren’t always in our control, particularly for those who have undergone one or several serious, traumatic events.

For those living with a mental health condition, the results of not getting treatment can be devastating and may lead to further mental health problems over time. It’s our goal to equip Australians with the skills and confidence to help those around them get the support they need.

This refresher course is suitable for people who are Accredited MHFAiders, offering an opportunity to extend their accreditation for a further three years.

Any adult (18+) seeking to support their family, friends, neighbours, community groups or general public who may be experiencing a mental health problem or mental health crisis until appropriate professional help is received or the crisis resolves, using a practical, evidence-based action plan can attend.

This course has been designed in 2 separate modules and is delivered in 4 hours face to face session with a Licensed Mental Health First Aid Instructor.

In the 4-hour Refresher course, we will…

  • Refresh our understanding of Mental Health problems

  • Learn to gain an understanding of the latest research in the mental health field

  • Learn the 3 key actions for helping someone feeling suicidal

  • Refresh ALGEE

  • Work through complex mental health first aid interactions

  • Practice mental health first aid skills.

This course will not teach you to diagnose a mental illness nor treat it, just as a conventional first aid course will not teach you to be a doctor.

  • You will learn or refresh on how to recognise the signs and symptoms that someone may have a mental health problem.

  • What you learn or refresh on will help you to be supportive of them and help them to receive appropriate professional help as early as possible.
