The Standard Mental Health First Aid Community course with Blended eLearning and Face-to-Face with an instructor, is an alternative pathway to the, 12-hour Standard Mental Health First Aid course. (for adults assisting other adults).

You will learn how to assist an adult who may be experiencing a mental health problem or mental health crisis until appropriate professional help is received or the crisis resolves, using a practical, evidence-based action plan.

Intervene early | Recognise the signs and symptoms of mental health problems in other adults.

Respond in a crisis | Assess for a range of crisis situations and provide initial support and how to respond across a range of crisis situations where an adult may be at risk of harm.

Offer support | Learn the skills to speak openly and accurately about mental health. Use an evidence-based action plan to initiate a mental health first aid conversation.

Reduce stigma | Understand the prevalence and impact of mental illnesses, risk factors and treatments and supports available.

Reduce stigma and increase support for adults experiencing and living with mental health problems.

This course is based on guidelines developed through the expert consensus of people with mental health problems and from the viewpoint of professionals within the mental health community.

Evaluations consistently show that MHFA training is associated with improved knowledge of mental illnesses, their treatments and appropriate first aid strategies, and confidence in providing first aid to individuals with mental illness.
It is also associated with decreased stigma and an increase in the help provided.

The Standard Mental Health First Aid for the Community course is an alternate online delivery pathway for our 12-hour Standard Mental Health First Aid course (for adults assisting other Adults). Blended MHFA courses include two components:

Course Component 1
A self-paced interactive eLearning (takes about 5-7 hours to complete).

Course Component 2
A 4-hour face-to-face workshop that is 2 sessions.

  • Session 1 We do a revision of eLearning modules on Mental Health in the community, we talk about the available resources and we are Revising on ALGEE, then we talk about Anxiety and Depression and Crisis first aid for suicidal thoughts.
  • Session 2 We apply the MHFA Action plan to help Alex and we do a revision of eLearning modules on psychosis, substance use problems and self-care and we finish by using the MHFA Action plan to help Sam.

The course is based on guidelines developed through the expert consensus of people with lived experience of mental health problems and professionals. It provides an overview of mental illnesses, risk factors, prevalence, and impact before taking a much closer look at the following mental health problems:

Mental health problems covered

  • Depression 
  • Anxiety problems 
  • Psychosis 
  • Substance use problems 

Mental health crises covered

  • Suicidal thoughts and behaviours 
  • Panic attacks 
  • Traumatic events 
  • Severe psychotic states 
  • Severe effects from alcohol/drug use 
  • Aggressive behaviours

Suitable for individuals, workplaces of all sizes, and volunteer and community-based groups.
Any adult (aged 18+) can attend.
There are no prerequisites for this course.
Please Note: This course is not a therapy or a support group.

Language, Literacy and Numeracy (LLN) Requirements
Participants will require suitable LLN skills to complete the following tasks/skills:

  • Read information from a PowerPoint, Manual and whiteboard
  • Listen and understand verbal information delivered by an English-speaking licensed Mental Health First Aid instructor.

Requirements for completion
Participants need to attend 100% of this first aid training.
If they can’t, please contact our office for further arrangements.

To receive accreditation as a Mental Health First Aider, you will be required to complete an online assessment following training. 

Certification Issued
This course does not form part of a Vocational Education Qualification.
Accreditation is provided by Mental Health First Aid Australia. 

Upon completing the post-training online assessment, certification is issued as a Mental Health First Aider.

Certification Validity
Three (3) years from the date of issue.
We recommend you use the email address that is still valid in 3 or 6 years time.

Standard MHFA Refresher training is required within the three years, taken as either a:

  • 4 hour face-to-face course or 
  • 2 separate 2.5 hour online video conferencing course. 

Taking a refresher course ensures you can hold on to your certification of validity.

In the 6th year of the first course, the full course must be completed again.

  • Session 1 | (2.5 Hours) – We do a revision of eLearning modules on Mental Health in the community, we talk about the available resources, and we are Revising on ALGEE, then we talk about Anxiety and Depression and Crisis first aid for suicidal thoughts. We applied the MHFA Action plan to help Alex.
  • Session 2 | (2.5hours) – We do a revision of eLearning modules on Cultural considerations, available resources, Psychosis, Substance use problems and self-care, and we finish by using the MHFA Action plan to help Tim.
