We don’t support the idea that mental health is ‘not a real health concern’. The reason we refer to the course as Mental Health First Aid is that, like any other health issue you may have, mental health issues can have very serious and widespread repercussions. Our mental states aren’t always in our control, particularly for those who have undergone one or several serious, traumatic events.
For those living with a mental health condition, the results of not getting treatment can be devastating and may lead to further mental health problems over time. It’s our goal to equip Australians with the skills and confidence to help those around them get the support they need.
The Youth Mental Health First Aid Course lasts for two days (14 hours, excluding break times) This course has been designed in four separate modules and can be delivered as four separate three-and-a-half-hour sessions upon corporate request.
We are introduced to youth mental health first aid, which covers adolescent development and common mental illnesses affecting youth. We also uncover the MHFA Action Plan and discuss signs and symptoms of depression in young people.
We continue our depression in young people and crisis first aid talk by exploring a difficult topic – suicidal thoughts and behaviours, as well as crisis first aid for non-suicidal self-injury. We also look at the signs and symptoms of anxiety in young people and different types of anxiety disorders.
We cover the MHFA Action plan for crisis first aid and traumatic events. This third module also looks at eating disorders, how to apply the action plan for eating disorders and, if they are in a crisis situation, first aid practice for medical emergencies.
We begin by looking at the signs and symptoms of psychosis in young people with the MHFA Action Plan. The Action Plan is aimed at helping those with psychotic disorders, especially those experiencing a severe psychotic state. We also look at substance misuse in young people and how to apply the MHFA Action Plan for substance misuse, as well as for any situation including intoxication, aggressive behaviour or other psychologically-based medical emergencies. This course will not teach you to diagnose mental illness nor treat it, just as a conventional first aid course will not teach you to be a doctor.
The ALGEE system is our basic framework for offering mental support, one which we teach in all our classrooms. The ALGEE system is as follows:

Participants are required to attend 100% of this first aid training. If you do not require certification and simply want to learn the skills taught on the course, then assessment is not required.
This course does not form part of a Vocational Education Qualification.
Accreditation is provided by Mental Health First Aid Australia.
Upon completing the post-training assessment, certification is issued as a Mental Health First Aider.
Three (3) years from the date of issue. We recommend you use the email address that is still valid in 3 or 6 years' time.
Refresher training is required after three years, which will either involve
- A four-hour instructor-led face-to-face course
- Two separate two-and-a-half-hour instructor-led, online Zoom video conferencing courses.
In the sixth year, the full course must be completed again. Taking a refresher course ensures you can hold on to your certification of validity.
Mental Health First Aid Australia (mhfa.com.au) courses are based on evidence which supports the best approaches to offering support to someone who has a mental health problem or is experiencing a mental health crisis.
This evidence has been developed in partnership with the University of Melbourne through developing Delphi method guidelines that cover many mental health problems, crises and in different contexts.
All MHFA courses are then evaluated using rigorous scientific methods to ensure they have a positive impact.
These evaluations consistently show that MHFA training is associated with improved knowledge of mental illnesses and their treatments, knowledge of appropriate first aid strategies, and confidence in providing first aid to individuals with mental illness, the benefits of which are maintained over time.
Some studies have also shown improved mental health in those who attend the training, decreases in stigmatising attitudes and increases in the amount and type of support provided to others.
