HLTAID012 Provide First Aid in an Education and Care Setting

This National Accredited Course is relevant for all staff employed in the childcare and education sector as well as parents and caregivers of children. Training and Assessment is delivered on behalf of ABC First Aid RTO 3399.

This course provides participants with the knowledge and skills required to provide a first aid response to infants, children and adults in line with first aid guidelines determined by the Australian Resuscitation Council (ARC) and other Australian national peak clinical bodies.

This course also includes first aid, asthma, and anaphylaxis training for students as required for compliance with the Education and Care Services National Law and the Education and Care Services National Regulation (2011).

This course applies to a range of workers within an education and care setting who are required to respond to a first aid emergency, including asthma and anaphylactic emergencies. This includes early childhood workers and educators who work with school age children in outside school hours care and vacation programs.

First Aid participants can be Aged 14 and above.

Participants under the age of 18 are required to provide a consent form completed by their legal guardian. This form can be found here.

Express Course (Blended)

This course is also known as Blended Face to Face and eLearning. Participants must complete up to 2.5 hours of online pre-course learning prior to attending a short face-to-face assessment session. Minimum duration is 1 hour*. A current or recently expired Statement of Attainment is required for express entry.

Standard Course (Face to Face)

This course is delivered entirely face-to-face in class. Up to 2.5 hours of pre-course online learning must be completed prior to attendance. Minimum duration is 6.5 hours.

Students are required to arrive at least 10 minutes prior to the course commencement or will be refused entry.

Participants are required to attend 100% of this first aid training and successfully demonstrate competence in all assessment activities.

Pre-course requirements: Participants must complete online pre-course learning prior to attending the face-to-face session. Login details will be provided upon enrolment. This must be completed before arrival.

There are no prerequisites for this course; however it is recommended that participants have sufficient English language and visual interpretation skills to successfully complete the first aid training.

Those completing the express version will need access to a computer or tablet to complete the eLearning component. Internet access is required.

Participants will also be required to undertake practical training and assessments at floor level. This includes demonstrating CPR on a manikin for a period of two minutes. If you have poor mobility or a current injury please discuss this with us prior to booking.

Clothing: We suggest that you wear comfortable casual clothing, as the practical nature of the demonstrations and practice may possibly require bending, kneeling and lying on the floor. Pants and flat shoes are recommended.

Language, Literacy and Numeracy (LLN) Requirements

Participants will require suitable LLN skills to complete the following tasks/skills:

  • Read information from a PowerPoint and whiteboard
  • Listen and understand verbal information delivered by an English-speaking trainer
  • Complete written incident report forms in English
  • Read and answer a multiple-choice question paper
  • Read and answer a short-written answer test
  • Listen to instructions of an Automated External Defibrillator where prompts are delivered in English
  • Be able to count to 30

Certification Validity

* Three (3) years from the date of issue.

You are required to undertake annual CPR refresher training.
