The face-to-face Mental Health First Aid for Tertiary Students course is our 14-hour Youth Mental Health First Aid course (for adults or Tertiary Students assisting their fellow students).

We will teach you how to provide initial support to Tertiary Students who may be experiencing a mental health problem or mental health crisis until appropriate professional help is received or the crisis resolves, using a practical, evidence-based Action Plan.

This course is based on guidelines developed through the expert consensus of people with lived experience of mental health problems and professionals.

Any adult (18+) seeking to support Tertiary Students or their family, friends, neighbours, community groups or general public who may be experiencing a mental health problem or mental health crisis until appropriate professional help is received or the crisis resolves, using a practical, evidence-based action plan can attend.

Blended Mental Health First Aid for Tertiary Students course is an alternate online delivery pathway for our 14-hour Youth Mental Health First Aid course (for Tertiary Students assisting their fellow students. Blended MHFA courses include two components:
Course Component 1 A self-paced interactive eLearning (takes about 5-7 hours to complete).
Course Component 2 A 4-hour face-to-face instructor-led workshop that is in 2 sessions.

  1. Session 1 – We do a revision of eLearning modules on Mental Health for Tertiary Students, we talk about the available resources, and we are Revising on ALGEE, then We will practice applying the knowledge using scenarios, a film and practice conversations with Anxiety and Depression, Eating disorders, Psychosis and Substance use problems.
  2. Session 2 – We apply the MHFA Action plan to help Clare, and we do a revision of eLearning modules on psychosis, substance use problems and self-care we have some practice conversations, watch another Video, and we do a quiz.

This course will cover the following mental health problems

  • Depression
  • Anxiety problems
  • Eating Disorders
  • Psychosis
  • Substance use problems
  • Suicidal thoughts and behaviours
  • Non-suicidal self-injury
  • Panic attacks
  • Traumatic events
  • Severe psychotic states
  • Severe effects from alcohol/drug use
  • Aggressive behaviours

Participants are required to attend 100% of this first aid training. To receive accreditation as a Mental Health First Aider, you will be required to complete an online assessment following training.

Due to the adult learning environment, ‘Your’ First Aid Trainer cannot accept MHFA registrations for participants under the age of 18.

With physical Provide First aid participants can be Aged 14 and above with parents/ guardian consent.

Language, Literacy and Numeracy (LLN) Requirements

Participants will require suitable LLN skills to complete the following tasks/skills:

  • Read information from a PowerPoint, Manual and whiteboard
  • Listen and understand verbal information delivered by an English-speaking
    Mental Health First Aid Australia Licensed Instructor

$325 per participant

Practical Only

$215 per participant

If the online course was purchased prior, ‘eCertificate of successful completion’ must be shown to an instructor on the day of the course and done within 3 months.

Please show your eCertificate of successful completion of the course (PDF) and bring your MHFA Manual to the Zoom workshop.

This course does not form part of a Vocational Education Qualification.

Accreditation is provided by Mental Health First Aid Australia.

On successful completion of the post-training assessment, certification is issued as a Mental Health First Aider.

Certification Validity

Three (3) years from the date of issue. (We recommend you use the email address that is still valid in 3 or 6 years’ time).

Refresher training is required after 3 years. which is either a 4 or 7-hour Face to Face course or a 2 or 3 x 2.5 hours online video conferencing course.

Online Tertiary MHFA

The online Mental Health First Aid for Tertiary Students course will teach you or any adult (18 years and over) how to provide initial support to fellow students experiencing a mental health problem or crisis.

Learn about the signs and symptoms of common mental health problems in young people, how to provide initial help, where and how to get professional help, what sort of help has been shown by research to be effective, and how to provide first aid in a crisis situation.

Any adult (18+) seeking to support Tertiary Students or their family, friends, neighbours, community groups or general public who may be experiencing a mental health problem or mental health crisis until appropriate professional help is received or the crisis resolves, using a practical, evidence-based action plan can attend.

Blended Mental Health First Aid for Tertiary Students course is an alternate online delivery pathway for our 14-hour Youth Mental Health First Aid course (for adults assisting fellow students). Blended MHFA courses include two components:

Course Component 1

A self-paced interactive eLearning (takes about 5-7 hours to complete).

Course Component 2

A Zoom video conferencing workshop that is 2 sessions of 2.5 hours each session.

  • Session 1 | (2.5 Hours) – We do a revision of eLearning modules on Mental Health First Aid for Tertiary Students, we talk about the available resources, and we are Revising on ALGEE, then we talk about Anxiety, Depression, Eating Disorders and discuss Crisis first aid for several scenarios. We apply the MHFA Action plan to a non-crisis scenario.
  • Session 2 | (2.5hours) – We do a revision of eLearning modules on Psychosis, Substance use problems and Self-care, and we finish by using the MHFA Action plan to help. We will practice applying the knowledge using scenarios, a film and a practice conversation.

This course will not teach you to diagnose a mental illness nor treat it, just as a conventional first aid course will not teach you to be a doctor.

  • You will learn or refresh on how to recognise the signs and symptoms that someone may have a mental health problem.
  • What you learn or refresh on will help you to be supportive of them and help them to receive appropriate professional help as early as possible.
