Course Summary

Standard Mental Health First Aid Refresher Training Course

The five-hour Standard Mental Health First Aid Refresher course allows people who have previously completed a 12 Standard Mental Health First Aid course to refresh their knowledge and skills.

For people who are Accredited MHFAiders, refresher courses offer an opportunity to extend their accreditation for a further three years.

A Mental Health First Aid Refresher Course can help you practise your mental health first aid skills in a supportive environment and get feedback.

Ensure you are providing the best possible, evidence-based first aid for people who are experiencing mental health problems, a worsening of an existing mental health problem or are currently undergoing a mental health crisis. You can also learn from other participants what language, tools or referrals work well.

So, if you’re looking for Mental Health First Aid Refresher Training or just a refresher, this is the tailored course to suit. With activities, questions and action plans designed to help the returning student, all of our material is aimed at developing and retaining the skills learnt in previous courses.

You will need to complete an online assessment at the end of this course to renew your accreditation. For people who are Accredited MHFAiders, refresher courses offer an opportunity to extend their accreditation for a further three years.

What living with mental health issues feels like

We don’t support the idea that mental health is ‘not a real health concern’. The reason we refer to the course as Mental Health First Aid is that, like any other health issue you may have, mental health issues can have very serious and widespread repercussions. Our mental states aren’t always in our control, particularly for those who have undergone one or several serious, traumatic events.

For those living with a mental health condition, the results of not getting treatment can be devastating and may lead to further mental health problems over time. It’s our goal to equip Australians with the skills and confidence to help those around them get the support they need.

Course Duration

The Mental Health First Aid Refresher Course is 5 hours, excluding break time. This course has been designed in two separate modules and can be delivered over in two lots over two and a half hours upon corporate request.

Over the five-hour Refresher course, we will…

  • Revise all Mental Health problems covered in previous courses
  • Gain an understanding of the latest research in the mental health field
  • Learn the 3 key actions for helping someone feeling suicidal
  • Refresh the ALGEE learning component
  • Work through complex mental health first aid interactions
  • Practice mental health first aid skills

This course will not teach you to diagnose a mental illness nor treat it, just as a conventional first aid course will not teach you to be a doctor.

  • You will learn or refresh your knowledge about how to recognise someone’s potential mental health problem.
  • The skills you pick up in this refresher course will help you support other mental health sufferers, enabling them to receive appropriate professional help as early as possible.

The ALGEE System

The ALGEE system is our basic framework for offering mental support, one which we teach in all our classrooms. The ALGEE system is as follows:

  • A - Approach the person, assess and assist with any crisis
  • L – Listen and communicate non-judgementally
  • G - Give support and information
  • E – Encourage the person to get appropriate professional help
  • E – Encourage other supports

Language, Literacy and Numeracy (LLN) Requirements

Participants will require suitable LLN skills to complete the following tasks/skills:

  • Read information from a PowerPoint, a manual and/or a whiteboard
  • Listen and understand verbal information delivered by an English-speaking
Mental Health First Aid Australia Accredited Instructor

*Please note: If attending an Online Zoom workshop, the instructor-led virtual sessions are live meetings conducted over the internet using video conferencing software (your instructor will provide a link for you to the Zoom platform). Upon confirmation of your place, your course instructor will send you a link via email to your Course Component 2 scheduled Zoom video conferencing sessions.

As a participant, you will need a quiet location where you will have privacy.

You can attend via your computer or tablet as you will need to be able to read the screen easily. The instructor needs to be able to see and hear you for you to participate in the training — therefore, access to a camera and a microphone for the session duration is mandatory.

Certification Issued

This course does not form part of a Vocational Education Qualification.
Accreditation is provided by Mental Health First Aid Australia. If you do not require certification and simply want to learn the skills taught in the course, then assessment is not required.

Upon completing the post-training assessment, certification is issued as a Mental Health First Aider.

Certification Validity

Three (3) years from the date of issue. We recommend you use the email address that is still valid in 3 or 6 years' time.

Refresher training is required after three years, which includes either a 4-7hour course or 2-3 two-and-a-half hour online video conferencing courses.

  • We also offer a five-hour instructor-led face-to-face course. It can be delivered as two separate two-and-a-half-hour courses upon corporate request. Another option includes two separate two-and-a-half hours of instructor-led, online video conferencing Zoom courses.

However, the full course must be completed in the sixth year.

Evidence-based Courses

Mental Health First Aid Australia (mhfa.com.au) courses are based on evidence which supports the best approaches to offering support to someone who has a mental health problem or is experiencing a mental health crisis.

This evidence has been developed in partnership with the University of Melbourne through developing Delphi method guidelines that cover many mental health problems, crises and in different contexts.

All MHFA courses are then evaluated using rigorous scientific methods to ensure they have a positive impact.

These evaluations consistently show that MHFA training is associated with improved knowledge of mental illnesses and their treatments, knowledge of appropriate first aid strategies, and confidence in providing first aid to individuals with mental illness, benefits which are maintained over time.

Some studies have also shown improved mental health in those who attend the training, decreases in stigmatising attitudes and increases in the amount and type of support provided to others.
