Course Summary

Blended Mental Health First Aid Course In Workplace

The Blended Mental Health First Aid for Workplace course is an alternate online delivery pathway for our 12-hour Standard Mental Health First Aid course (for adults assisting co-workers).

We will teach you how to provide initial support to co-workers who may be experiencing a mental health problem or a mental health crisis. This support is meant to last until appropriate professional help is received or the crisis resolves itself and is implemented using a practical, evidence-based Action Plan.

This course is based on guidelines developed through the expert consensus of people who have experienced mental health problems, as well as knowledge collected from trained professionals. So, if you’re looking for a Mental Health First Aid Course For the Workplace or other places of business, this is the tailored course to suit. With activities, questions and action plans designed around the work environment, all of our material is designed to help benefit the working professional.

Mental health problems covered

  • Depression
  • Anxiety problems
  • Psychosis
  • Substance use problems

Mental health crises covered

  • Suicidal thoughts and behaviours

What living with mental health issues feels like

We don’t support the idea that mental health is ‘not a real health concern’. The reason we refer to the course as Mental Health First Aid is that, like any other health issue you may have, mental health issues can have very serious and widespread repercussions. Our mental states aren’t always in our control, particularly those who have undergone one or several serious, traumatic events.

For those living with a mental health condition, the results of not getting treatment can be devastating and may lead to further mental health problems over time. It’s our goal to equip Australians with the skills and confidence to help those around them get the support they need.

Course Duration

The Blended Mental Health First Aid for Workplace course is an alternate online delivery pathway for our 12-hour Standard Mental Health First Aid course (for adults assisting other Adults). Blended MHFA courses include two components:

Course Component 1

A self-paced interactive eLearning environment (takes about 5-7 hours to complete).

Course Component 2

A 4-hour face-to-face workshop over two sessions:

  • Session 1 - We revise eLearning modules on Mental Health in the workplace, talk about the available resources and revise the ALGEE system. This is undertaken before applying our new knowledge with practical scenarios, watching a short film and practising our conversation skills around Anxiety, Depression, Psychosis and Substance use problems.
  • Session 2 – We apply the MHFA Action plan to a scenario and revise our eLearning modules on psychosis and substance abuse problems. During this session, we focus on the benefits of self-care, have some more practice conversations and complete a quiz.

The ALGEE System

The ALGEE system is our basic framework for offering mental support, one which we teach in all our classrooms. The ALGEE system is as follows:

  • A - Approach the person, assess and assist with any crisis
  • L – Listen and communicate non-judgementally
  • G - Give support and information
  • E – Encourage the person to get appropriate professional help
  • E – Encourage other supports

In the sixth year, the full course must be completed again.

Evidence-based Courses

Mental Health First Aid Australia (mhfa.com.au) courses are based on evidence which supports the best approaches to offering support to someone who has a mental health problem or is experiencing a mental health crisis.

This evidence has been developed in partnership with the University of Melbourne and gathered through developing Delphi method guidelines that cover a number of mental health problems, crises and different contexts.

All MHFA courses are evaluated using rigorous scientific methods to ensure they have a positive impact.

These evaluations consistently show that MHFA training is associated with improved knowledge of mental illnesses and their treatments, knowledge of appropriate first aid strategies, and confidence in providing first aid to individuals with mental illness, benefits which are maintained over time.

Some studies have also shown improved mental health in those who attend the training, decreases in stigmatising attitudes and increases in the amount and type of support provided to others.
